National Hunt season comes alive

We were expecting a storm of action and pointers last weekend with the Paddy power meeting at Cheltenham, and all in all it didnt happen quite as many would have expected. it would take a fool to suggest that this weekend action has not lived up to expectation however with a string of purely brilliant performaces encapsulating why National hunt racing is the massive draw for fans and punters alike. Riveting, exciting, pulsating clashes of aged performers, class acts and young pretender all come together to lock horns around the country. Plenty of pointers for the big races to come this term, and for kempton at Christmas and THE Festival in March back at Cheltenham.

I'll start by mentioning one which not get headlines today but was an early indicator for what should turn out to be the start of a very good season over fences for Henry Daly and in particular POSSOL. Unfancied in the tissue prices overnight and 5/1, the shrewd would have noticed that although this was a very obvious season opener over hurdles before another chase campiagn he was in company that should not have been up to his class and should have been getting on Betfair at the generosity on offer, and so it was to be. Backed in to 11/8 favouritism, he never looked in doubt and won in emphatic style, boding well for the coming months in which we are most likley to see him taking on more hurdle races to keep his Chase mark sufficiently low to give him the best chance in the target of the Grand National. he probably has some more to do to be winning that event, but we shall be keeping a close eye on his progress.

Just prior to that race PEPE SIMO continued his quiet demolition of everything he faces in winning a small field event in the opener at Haydock. Will be interesting if he is steered toward the Supreme Novices, and we will have to see how he fares if taking up a place in the Tolworth. This was a third appearance for Paul Nichols charge and he remains unbeaten. Whilst not a betting event for me due to the weight he was giving away on official ratings, he destroyed the runner up to whom he would have been giving away 13lbs. Suggesting he is improving at an alarming rate.

One of the best bets of the day was to be had at Haydock with DIAMOND HARRY coming into the race as big as 6/1 to get back to winning ways. His only defeat in seven outings to date had come at the Ballymore Novices at Cheltenham, and this has been the last time we had seen him. Previous to that he had the beating of Bensalem and Tataniano, both of whom hasd already appeared and won this term. He travelled really well and went right around the wide outside throughout. A mark of 149 and top weight, he completly turned over those factors and never truely came off the bridle, Timmy Murphy so completly confident he had so much more beneath him that he played with Burton Port in the closing stages. Be careful in considering this form for the runner up later in the season, had they both been all out, he would have been a further 10 lngths down. Chasing or hurdling? thats the question, presonally i would love to see him in the World hurdle, but the Royla Sun Alliance chase is also a possibility. One way or another, the cat is out of the bag and he looks a class act now.

Nicky Henderson has returned from his "holiday" in the summer with his string in good order, and none so more than ZAYNAR. He showed his battling skills last year at Cheltenham in staying up the hill and beating WALKON in the Triumph hurdle, who we will not be seeing this term after injury has ruled him out for year. Up against KATCHIT and KARABAK, he looked to have a handful to contend with, but travelled well throughout and went clear with some ease to score an impressive win. With Punjabi and Binocular in his armoury prices on a Henderson winner in the Champion Hurdle will be short right now and a quote for ZAYNAR at 8/1 now will likely roll out to double figures at some stage and would be worth considering.

Onto the big guns and the focus was on Ditcheat again with the much anticipated seasonal reappearance of the great Champion, and only ever runner to have retained, after a break, the Gold Cup crown at Cheltenham KUATO STAR. It was unlikely the early morning odds for would last and so it was. they were snapped up and he went off a 4/6 hot favourite to emerge victor over Welsh National winner NOTRE PERE. Once again not a betting event, but rather one to watch to see what couls be taken out the race for future reference. IMPERIAL COMMANDER and MADISON DE BERLAIS were the main opposition as far aslast seaosn improvement were concerned and it would be interesting to see how far they had come up against the ultimate benchmark. The former available pre race at 25/1 for the Gold Cup was probably the one to be speculating with, a small ante-post dabble was in order. NOTRE PERE never looked like he would be able to muster muchof a challenge and was beaten a long way out, and as IMPERIAL COMMANDER upped the pace and all but the champ fell away, it was a question of who would stay the trip, at this point, KAUTO STAR would have been tradin very short with his rival hitting this far for the first time on a race track. Despite the fav coming off the bridle quite early it stilled looked the favourites race to lose as he out jumped Imperial Commander. however, between the fences the latter kept coming back to him. They hit the final fence together and locked horns for the run in, Imperial commander looked to have been peggin back inch by inch to get up on the line. It was a tight finish and plenty would have bee lost in backing the challenger to have won, at first glance when they crossed the line, Kauto looked to have had to settle for a runner up spot once again on his seasonla bow, but to a chorus of boos on course the call was his and his stall was set out for the year and his battling qualities highlighted. No doubt, considering the distance between the winner and third and behind, this run was up there with his best and consideration must be given to the improvement Imperial Commander has achieved. That 25/1 ante post voucher looks value now. We'll see what Denman has next weekend. I've long though the Gold Cup, whilst still likely to be billed as Denman v Kauto (part 3), will be a more open race this year with new chanllengers improving to the level required. The winter will provide more clues.

It was left to ALAN KING and his VOY POR USTEDES to see what he could achieve down at Ascot. As it was some may have been disappointed to see him up against from a way out, but staying on really well, a step back up in trip will surely be on the cards. ALBERTAS RUN confirmed his questioned class by running away with the race, and note should be taken of what
he achieved here today. His last win was in the RSA at Cheltenham in 2008. Form reader however should have noticed his beating of VOY POR in the King George last year just 8 lengths nehind KAUTO STAR. He was certainly underestimated in being allowed ot go off as long as 7/1 for this. PLANET OF SOUND made a huge mistake at the ninth fence and but for that he may have been much closer or perhaps have been the one making his way to the winners enclosure post race. As it was he stayed on really well and will be winning a race pretty soon.

A brilliant days racing was had and plenty of notes to add to the book for consideration for the coming months. National hunt truly is king of racing, for getting the blood racing around the veins and engaging the attention of the public

Sea The Stars

And so it was. In witnessing a page in history being written by the John Oxx star stablemate of a similar name, we were also witnessing his final appearance on the race course competitively.
Barring any George Washington style comeback, (ill fated as it was), another great flat horse has been lost to the money making world of stud.

To that end we can not blame the owners and connections who ultimately can realise tenfold plus what they could in prize money from racing their pride and joy. Young Choi is not a silly young man, indeed, with revenue gained through stud the dream of finding another sea the Stars is far more realistic with a bigger bank opening bigger avenues of choice. It is to the detriment of the sport per say, and the reason why as a sporting spectacle it cannot compete with its cousin National Hunt. Over the Winter and spring we get to see each years greats appear year after year to renew rivalries with old foes and up and coming potential. This is something flat racing can never compete with.

Never will flat racing have a Best Mate, a Dessie, a Kauto Star. Never will we see the likes of repeat winning performances year after year that we have witnessed even recently with Inglis Drever, Baracouda, or Hardy Eustace and Istabraq in the Champion Hurdle.

Once again, financially, it's understandable, from a purist view however it's a shame.

Roll on the winter!!

WHAT A DAY!!!

Firstly todays members e-mail.

we didnt play on tuesday so got started yesterday with one placed an an unplaced runner, but came back into form today with a nice 7/1 return. Advised at 14 on betfair and returnign at 11 on betfair Sp which is always the advice. This week will again be a winning one.

here is todays e-mail,

Anyone remember this from last Wednesdays mail?

I was also advised that Cathy Gannon will be getting her holiday money this week and will have a winner. It has been suggested that she may take over the ride from Steve Drowne on Palace Moon this week but we'll see what happens there. In the 2.30 at Warwick tomorrow she rides for Mick Channon on LOFTHOUSE.

Well, i'm not sure if we've done alright or not. Of course we collected with Palace moon on Saturday, but it looks like the Gannon info was a week early as she scored with a 33/1 shot for Channon at Lingfield this Wednesday. Mr B has been quiet on the phone tonight, i shall speak in the morning and see why we didnt know.

Todays selections and a cracking price for me for the first one. I honestly think this one is out of line, i was expecting to see maybe 7.4-8 maybe....

4.25 Salisbury - TROPICAL PARADISE 1 point win at around 14 on Betfair

From a bad draw at Ascot last time, he was headed in the final furlong and just couldn’t get back, the speed rating from that race is better than anything I have for the remainder and it looks a solid piece of form. Enact is the one we are taking on whilst Romany Princess could be the one to make up the places. I was ummin and ahhing about this race until i saw the price for the Winkworth runner, and this is seriously underestimated at a current 14 on Betfair. Maybe one for EW players if not confident of the win, but the officialadvice and for recording purposes is win only.

4.15 Redcar - NEVA A MULL MOMENT Betfair Sp

This is an interesting race and being a maiden not one i would usually look at taking on. However i am interesting in the Nichols runner here with Adrian on board. Whilst i am happy to quickly omit Miss Frangipan from calculations for this race, Equnine i feel needs to be taken more seriously as a threat but could be at the wrong trip. The price is see now available for the Nichols runner looks good value against a couple of his most recent runs when maybe a tad unlucky in what he has come up against. He's not been beaten far on his last two and from my figures has been posting improvement each time. He's a good draw in three to avoid any trouble and is fancied

Lovely Weekend Double!

After a quiet week with some poor racing midweek. Saturday was ime to get back down to business, and business we did, Getting an early 5/1 on Betfair for Palace Moon, the day was set up nicely when it scored. Topped off with another nice priced winner later in the day at Cartmel

Here's todays mail

Well, from a quiet week, Saturday is crazy. I do several sweeps of the cards looking for specifics to create a shortlist to further investigate and form read to find the daily selections. After the initial sweeps today there were 14 on the shortlist. This pretty much means another 7 hours form reading at least. Having gone through them all again, it was 5am by the time i got the list down to eight. Finally i have narrowed it down to the strongest of the bunch and hopefully we will get some nice Saturday return with this lot. Saturdays have been pretty good for me over the summer. I've missed my Sleep for last nighyt now and it would be easy to get my head down, but i think i shall work through it and have an early night tonight. instead, i am going to take all the weekends and saturdays and analyse the results over the summer. See if there are any further trends within the selections and results we can exploit next year.

Anyway, heres todays final pair

3.25 Newmarket - PALACE MOON
Upped to 7f last time out to take on the hungerford Stakes at Newbury, after pulling hard (as he is likened to do early on) he was one paced in the final furlong. this drop back to 6 on this undulating course make him interesting. He has generally run only on flat tacks but showed up well enough on his only other outing here when third in a conditions race here last back end.
Of course We were on TAMAGIN last time out and it is likely that he will lead out. Only just cought last time this is tougher. my bet is on the Morrison hot shot.

5.00 Cartmel - WENSLYDALE WEB
This Todhunter inmate return to Cartmel after giving her best career performance here on her penultimate outing. That run came in simialr consditions to tdays event when headed and beaten a nose on the line when clear of the remainder of the field. Last time at Bangor she was facing a much tougher field of runners and did well enough, but now back in the same level of company as the previous Cartmel run, she has a good chance again. I would be looking for around 7 on Betfair. Look out for both Major Title and Obara D'avril in the race. they rate as the biggest dangers to the selection.
